20 - The Road North

Northwards, the road leads into the forest about half an hour beyond Alesia and will not emerge from it again for several hours of way, when it opens to the fields of 23 - Lergovia. One the way there, two small paths split off, leading to the 21 - St. Heinrich Convent and 22 - Selmwald.

This is not a roman road, but a simple dirt path. The ground is still slightly wet and the cart tracks are visible every few minutes in some puddle or muddy stretch.

About halfway through the forest, the party will encounter:

Monk & Wolves

If the party pressed on and is in the forest in the late afternoon, with the light already fading and maybe two hours of daylight left - realizing that they really need to walk briskly or they won't make it to the next village - they hear a scream far ahead, then another, then one more desperate and then silence. It all sounded like from the same person.

If the party spent the night in Alesia and travels during the day, they will not hear anything in the forest and only come upon the remains of the monk.

About 10 minutes further down the road, if they hurry, the part will come upon a small path leading eastwards and an old, weathered sign reading "St. Heinrich Convent" pointing that way. This is clearly a side-road and the main road (and cart tracks) carries on northwards.
The villagers did not mention this christian monastery. They didn't think it was important and were sure the entertainers wouldn't go there anyways.
If for whatever reason the party decides to travel to the convent, you can find details of the place in 21 - St. Heinrich Convent, but keep in mind that they do not yet know about the monk and the letter.

Another 10 minutes or so further along, a bloodied monk robe ripped to shred lies in several pieces across the road, with several pools of blood (fresh if the party comes in the evening and heard the screams).

Searching the Scene

Assessing the situation with a successful mental (perception) roll makes it clear that this monk was attacked and cut to pieces. His body is nowhere to be found, but several bloody tracks lead into the forest, and at the edge of the road, paw prints of wolves can be found.

On a critical success or if someone explicitly mentions searching the robe, that character will discover that a letter has been sewn into the inside. It is not hidden or concealed, it was merely sewn in due to lack of pockets and as protection against rain and dirt.

The Letter

The letter is addressed Father Perlos at the St. Heinrich Convent. It is written in Church Latin but characters who can read vulgar latin will be able to make sense of most of it.

The Letter

My dear Father Perlos,

It has come to my attention that the area around your Convent is, despite all your efforts, still a stronghold of pagan worshippers and other satanic folk lore. No doubt invading our beautiful Gallia on the heels of the Germanic conquerors.
However, while our brethren in other areas have had great success in converting these heathens to the true faith, I have seen no such progress in Alesia, Lergovia, Dolmbar, Selmwald or Alsbach, which is to say, in the villages and hamlets around your Convent.
You must double your efforts of conversion and ensure that there is at least a church built in these places. How else can the souls of the faithful be saved?
I have acquired some good building stones and craftsmen and am eagerly waiting for your response as to where to send them to begin construction of the first church immediately.
The aspirant I sent with this letter will wait until you have written your answer. I have asked him to travel quickly.

Yours in the light of our Lord,
Bishop Canar

From the letter and circumstances it should become clear that the monk was traveling alone and without caution, either due to haste or inexperience. He has certainly been attacked by wolves.

The Body

If the characters follow the bloody trail into the forest, they will eventually come upon the mangled remains of the monk, half eaten by wolves.

Note

To any character who follows the christian faith, a monk not being properly buried is something that needs to be rectified. And a quick grave in the forest certainly won't do. If for no other reason, bringing these news to the convent would be of importance.

At Night

If the party pressed on, night will begin to fall as they search the scene and it will become instantly clear to them that the attackers were, indeed, wolves - they hear the howling of a pack of just such creatures not far and slightly north-west of their location.

They can press on and will most likely run into the wolves, or they can backtrack and try to get to the Convent. They do not know how close or far it is, but they can try. This is the safer option as the Convent is less than half a mile from the junction.

If they run to the Convent, the howling of wolves will get closer and closer, but only a single wolf ahead of the pack will make a pass at them, attacking from the bushes when they can already see the building ahead.
Whoever is at the back of the party should roll, either a reaction roll if they are running or an action roll (with bonuses as applicable) if they are actively taking up the rear guard. If the wolf hits, he will cause moderate damage. In any case, he will attack only once and then run off the meet with the rest of the pack.

Wolf Pack

If the characters press on, make camp or otherwise not make their way to the Convent quickly, they will be encircled by a pack of wolves as the sun goes down and then attacked from multiple sides.
The number of wolves should be adapted to the party. One wolf per character, plus one wolf for every warrior in the group, i.e. anyone with armour, a proper weapon and some melee skill.

The position of the characters is desperate as they are surrounded and it is getting dark quickly. If they have a camp fire or several torches, they can improve their position to risky.

Wolves will do moderate harm if they hit.
They have no concept of weapons and armour and will attack whoever is closest - spread out the wolf attacks among the party except for any members that are explicitly protected such as being in the center of a circle formed by the other characters.

These are ordinary animals, so they will retreat when suffering moderate or 2 or more boxes of lesser harm. When 3 or more wolves have retreated, the entire pack will abandon the attack.
Wolves will also retreat if they suffer any harm from a fire attack, be it with a torch or a spell.

Continue with 21 - St. Heinrich Convent.

During the Day

If the party rested in Alesia, they will come upon the remains of the monk during the day, and there will be no attack by wolves.

They can still decide to make a detour to the convent, though they already lost quite some time.

Continue with either 21 - St. Heinrich Convent or 22 - Selmwald and then 23 - Lergovia as appropriate.
