Much in this adventure depends on the characters' interaction with the main NPCs, especially the entertainer boy, Geralt, and the farmer's daughter, Elaine.
When watched from a distance, these two are inseparable. Except when Geralt is on stage to perform, Elaine follows him everywhere. Both clearly enjoy each other's presence and they joke and laugh a lot.
Elaine is almost 14, which in her eyes means that she's an adult and can make her own decisions.
She is quite handsome, with her long blonde hair and slender body punctuated by a nice bosom and amazing green eyes. Like her father, she is ethnically a Suebi (a germanic tribe) and while she was brought up a christian, she also knows many of the older legends.
She is also madly in love with Geralt, in the way only teenage girls can be. Her life goal, at least at the moment, is to be with him. She is not easily deterred from that, and will talk tough, lie and run away - whatever is necessary.
When questioned by the characters, she at first will appeal to their romantic side, telling them that Geralt is the love of her life, she will never want another, she is so happy with him, and as she's an adult already, it is her decision to make.
It is, of course, not her decision to make. Custom both among the Gallo-Romans and the freshly settled Germanic tribes is that the father arranges marriages for his children. While some fathers consider their kid's wishes, the ultimate decision lies with the parent, not the child.
If she sees that this does not sway the characters, she will change gears and claim that she also ran away because her father beats her and makes her do all the dirty work on the farm.
These claims are exaggerated at best. While it is true that since her mother fell ill, Elaine has more duties at home, it is merely her perception that those duties are unfairly distributed. She does, however, honestly believe so.
That her father beats her is a flat out lie. While Jacques does punish her brothers sometimes (which for this time and age is absolutely normal parenting), he has never hit much less beaten Elaine.
No matter what they say or offer, Elaine will not come with the party voluntarily. If they attempt to bring her by force, she will yell for the guards and make a scene, hoping that Geralt and his friends at least will come to her aid (see below for details).
If it becomes clear that the characters are both willing and able to take her away from Geralt by force, she will change gears again and pretend to give in. She is clever enough to understand that running away from the characters (which is her plan) is only possible if they don't tie her up.
She will run away at the first opportunity, either back to 23 - Lergovia or if it is closer, to the 21 - St. Heinrich Convent, where she will claim the characters want to rob, rape and murder her.
All that said, as long as nobody wants to stand between her and Geralt, she is a sweet girl.
Geralt just turned 17 but due to his life on the road he looks older, maybe 19.
He is a sturdy boy, muscular with brown hair and eyes, a bit shorter than other boys his age, but still a head taller than Elaine.
He has also fallen in love, though not as madly as Elaine. He is ready to get into a fist-fight over her, but as soon as someone draws a weapon, he is out. He does love the girl, but not enough to get killed.
In fact, Geralt is not entirely sure about his feelings. He enjoys Elaine and her presence every moment, but if pressed he is unsure if she is just a fling or true love. This may lead to him making some seemingly contradictory statements or actions, because he honestly doesn't know. He is old enough to be aware that her running away can't be a solution. He knows that if he wants to keep her, he should go back and ask for her hand. But he doesn't know yet if he wants to commit that fully, and even less whether he should bring her on the road with him or settle down with her to do farming.
