As a player, keep in mind that an action roll is where narration and dice mechanics meet. An action roll is not something where you are passive, just rolling the dice. Many things that your character does in the fiction will add dice, improve position or effect or otherwise influence the action roll.
This is true in any situation. In combat, you want to remember the wisdom passed down by countless veterans: Fight dirty.
Sure, you can just wait for the turn to come to you, announce that you attack with the goal of killing the enemy, and roll the dice. But you can also describe your attack, how you exploit the weakness your enemy showed last turn, how you sidestep, gain the higher ground and stab him when he's looking at your friend who distracted him for a second. Some of these actions will require rolls or spending resources. Your friend distracting him, for example, would be the Stress > Assist Others option and cost your friend 1 stress, but it will give you +1 die.
