The name "Lucifer" was not yet used to refer to the devil. In fact, it was an ordinary name as well as simply a Latin term meaning "light bearer" and would be used to describe, say, someone carrying a torch. There are a number of Bishops (Lucifer of Siena) and even saints (St. Lucifer of Cagliari) bear this name.
